Gemini can now draw diagrams inside Google Docs

Google began rolling out inline visual generation in Docs on July 28, 2026, across both its Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with full visibility expected within about 15 days. You can now ask Gemini, from the side panel, to build a diagram, an infographic or an image directly inside a document, and it reads the surrounding text as context so the visual matches what you are actually writing. You can also ask it to insert section-specific infographics across a long document in one pass, and to refine an existing visual with a follow-up prompt instead of regenerating from scratch.

The same July update added deck generation in Slides: describe the presentation you want, point Gemini at existing docs, sheets or past decks to match your formatting, and it drafts a complete, editable deck while asking clarifying questions along the way.

Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Education Plus, and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get it at no extra charge. Business Starter, the roughly $7-per-user entry plan a lot of very small teams are still on, does not: Starter's Gemini access is limited to Help Me Write in Gmail. If your business is on Starter, this feature will not appear until someone upgrades the account to Standard or above.

Being on an eligible plan is not enough on its own. Gemini in the Docs side panel also requires 'smart features and personalisation' to be turned on for your domain in the Admin console, and on a fair number of business accounts that default was left off during setup. If nobody on your team can see the Gemini icon in Docs despite paying for Standard or Plus, that admin setting is the first thing to check, not a support ticket.

Before this, turning a paragraph in a proposal or an SOP into a diagram meant leaving Docs for Canva, PowerPoint, or a designer, which is exactly the kind of friction that makes people skip the visual and ship a wall of text instead. Now the diagram can happen in the same window, on the same document, without breaking the writing flow. Pair it with the new Slides deck generation and a client proposal that used to take an afternoon of formatting can start from the Doc you already wrote.

None of that happens automatically just because the feature exists. Have one person try it on a real document this week, not a test file, and show the result to the rest of the team. That is what turns a feature announcement into something people actually reach for.
